Her Pakistani and Canadian roots have shaped a design philosophy that blends tradition with innovation — creating garments that feel both grounded in culture and alive with contemporary spirit. In our conversation, she opened up about the philosophy she weaves into her designs, the sources of her inspiration, and the delicate balance between motherhood and creativity — a harmony that defines both her life and her brand.

For Ehtasham, fashion has always been more than clothing — it is a language of self-expression. It tells a story about who we are, where we come from, and what we aspire to be.

“My inspiration comes from life itself — the people I meet, the cultures I experience, and the emotions I want to translate into fabric,” she shares. Her constant pursuit of designs that speak with both beauty and purpose has become one of the core philosophies behind her brand. Each creation carries a message — of strength, freedom, and the celebration of identity. For her, fashion is more than craft; it is an art form that transforms fabric into identity and dreams into something you can wear.

Creating a new collection is a meticulous process that takes, on average, three to four months — from the first sketches to the final runway pieces. The journey involves research, fabric sourcing, pattern making, fittings, and countless refinements to ensure every detail feels intentional.

“I’m very selective when it comes to choosing materials and suppliers,” she explains. “They form the foundation of every collection. It’s important that the fabrics not only look beautiful but also feel comfortable and durable.”

Every collection begins with a story or a theme — and only then does the search for the perfect fabric begin. Depending on the scale and complexity of the line, the process can take even longer, especially when intricate handwork and embellishments come into play.

At RunwayTO, SANA EHTASHAM presented its collection titled LYLA.

“For me, LYLA was more than a name — it represented beauty, strength, and a modern elegance that connects tradition with contemporary style,” she says.

The creative process began with the idea of using rich, deep tones to capture both power and grace. From sketching the first designs to carefully selecting fabrics, every step was guided by the theme of celebrating individuality.

In this collection, she paid special attention to colour psychology, silhouettes, and the delicate details that make each piece feel powerful yet timeless. On the runway, LYLA came alive through flowing fabrics, jewel tones, and silhouettes that mirrored both tradition and freedom — a visual symphony of strength and grace.

Recently, the brand expanded into accessories with the launch of a clutch collection called Love Letters, which holds a very special place in the designer’s heart. Each milestone — from balancing family and career to expanding creatively — reminds her why she loves what she does and fuels her passion to keep moving forward.

Even after the birth of Sana’s triplets, she remained deeply committed to her work while ensuring her family always came first.

“Balancing my professional journey with motherhood hasn’t been easy,” she admits, “but it has been deeply rewarding. I’m proud of how I’ve managed both with love and focus.”

For Sana Ehtasham, authenticity lies at the heart of timeless design.

“I believe originality comes from staying true to your own voice and vision. Trends come and go, but what lasts is authenticity.”

Each of her creations carries meaning — an emotion, a cultural reflection, a story.

“My originality comes from my passion, my heritage, and the stories I want to tell through fashion. That’s what keeps my designs unique, even in a trend-driven industry.”

Through her work, she reminds us that fashion can do more than adorn — it can inspire, heal, and tell stories that words alone cannot.

Her vision reaches beyond the runway. The designer hopes to collaborate with organisations focused on women’s mental-health awareness, aiming to empower women while connecting cultures through design.

“Fashion has the power to bring people together,” Sana says. “But it also has a deeper role — in how we see ourselves and how we love ourselves. No design can truly shine if you’re not taking care of your mind and embracing your inner sparkle.”

Her dream is to create projects that merge cultural diversity with self-love — designs that celebrate tradition while inspiring confidence, authenticity, and emotional well-being.

“For me, fashion is not just about style,” she adds. “It’s about identity, empowerment, and healing. A collaboration that unites these values would be the ultimate dream.”

And to young designers stepping into the industry, her message is one of resilience and faith:

“Stay true to your vision and be patient with the process. Fashion can look glamorous from the outside, but behind it lies hard work, discipline, and resilience. Don’t be afraid to take risks — just make sure your work reflects who you truly are. Believe in yourself, even when others don’t, because your uniqueness is your greatest strength.”
