When better to enjoy mulled wine than in the heart of winter? This comforting drink embodies the holiday season — filling the air with citrus notes, warm spices, and the velvety aroma of gently heated wine.

Mulled wine dates back to Ancient Rome, where it was first created as a warm, spiced remedy to protect against the cold. Over time, the tradition spread across Europe and became especially cherished in Germany and the United Kingdom, where it’s now considered an essential winter ritual.

Although the classic version is made with red wine, modern variations include popular alcohol-free options based on cherry or grape juice — making this festive drink accessible to everyone.

Ingredients (serves 2–3)

  • 1 bottle dry red wine (or cherry juice for a non-alcoholic version)
  • 1 orange
  • 2–3 cinnamon sticks
  • 4–6 whole cloves
  • 2–3 star anise pods
  • 2–3 tbsp honey or brown sugar
  • 3–4 lemon slices (optional)
  • A pinch of nutmeg
  • 50–80 ml of water or apple juice (for a lighter version)

Instructions

1. Prepare the spiced base

Pour the water or apple juice into a small saucepan. Add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise and nutmeg. Warm over low heat for 3–5 minutes to allow the spices to release their aroma.

2. Add the citrus

Slice the orange into rounds and place them in the pan. Add a few lemon slices if you prefer a brighter, tangier flavour.

3. Pour in the wine

Add the red wine (or cherry juice). Heat gently over low heat.

Do not let it boil — boiling can evaporate the alcohol and make the flavour harsh.

4. Sweeten

Stir in the honey or brown sugar until completely dissolved.

5. Let it steep

Keep the mulled wine on low heat for 10–15 minutes. The longer it infuses, the richer and deeper the flavour becomes.
