Redefining Design: Seneca Polytechnic Graduates Presented the Next Generation of Fashion

There are fashion events, and then there are those that stay with you long after the last model leaves the runway. Seneca Polytechnic’s annual Graduate Showcase, held on April 16 at the Newnham Campus, was exactly that kind of evening — not simply a student presentation, but a confident introduction to the next generation of Canadian fashion.

Under the title Redefining Design, this year’s showcase brought together graduates from the School of Fashion, presenting final collections and creative projects that had clearly outgrown the classroom. The evening introduced guests to a world of emerging designers, florists, visual merchandisers, beauty specialists, and fashion business strategists — all united by ambition, precision, and a clear vision for the future of the industry.

The heart of the evening was the runway show, where students from the Fashion Arts Advanced Diploma program unveiled their final capstone collections — looks imagined, created, and styled entirely by the graduates themselves.

Since September 2025, students had been immersed in an intensive design journey: researching concepts, sourcing fabrics and materials, building prototypes, and gradually transforming their ideas into fully realized fashion stories. What unfolded on the runway felt less like a student presentation and more like a confident statement: the next generation of Canadian fashion is already here.

The collections spanned womenswear, menswear, and ungendered design, bringing together eveningwear, outerwear, streetwear, avant-garde, contemporary design, and art-to-wear. Strong tailoring, sculptural silhouettes, thoughtful craftsmanship, and confident styling demonstrated an impressive level of professionalism.

Among the honoured industry judges were Project Runway Canada winner Leeland Mitchell and finalist Charles Lu. Their presence added weight to an evening that already felt far more like an industry event than an academic showcase.

Hosting the evening was Stella Acquisto — a Seneca Journalism alumna and Citytv on-air host — whose presence brought warmth and a strong sense of connection to the event. Her role served as a powerful reminder that the path from this runway to the industry spotlight is not only possible, but already familiar to many graduates.

Beyond the runway, Redefining Design revealed itself as a complete fashion ecosystem. The judges’ panel, industry guests, curated installations, live beauty demonstrations, floral displays, and fashion business presentations all worked together to create an atmosphere that felt polished, immersive, and undeniably professional.

Students from the Cosmetic Techniques & Management program were responsible for the beauty artistry, creating runway-ready makeup looks that enhanced each collection and completed every designer’s vision with precision and understated elegance.

Throughout the evening, guests were surrounded by striking floral installations created by graduates of the Floral Design program. Their work added texture, colour, and emotion to the space, transforming the venue from a simple event hall into a fully immersive environment with its own mood and visual story.

Visual Merchandising Arts students created large-scale installations that transformed the campus into a complete fashion landscape. Their curated spaces shaped the guest experience and proved once again that fashion storytelling begins long before the first model steps onto the runway.

At its best, fashion is never just clothing. It is memory, identity, and ambition stitched into form. That feeling defined the entire evening.

To attend Redefining Design was to witness a generation of designers already prepared to inspire, challenge, and shape the future of fashion. It did not feel like the beginning of their careers. It felt like the beginning of something much bigger.
