Elia Rose Johnson: On Modelling, Volleyball, and Her Nonna’s Wisdom
An interview with model Elia Rose Johnson on overcoming fears, sport, and what success truly means

Some people spend years dreaming of the runway. Elia Rose Johnson never thought about it — until modelling found her. Student, volleyball player, gymnastics coach — and model at Orange Models. Her day starts at 6:30 and ends close to midnight. And somehow, she does it all.

It all started not with a dream of the runway, but with something far simpler — a desire to overcome fear. Elia grew up with anxiety over the smallest things. It was her nonna — with her vintage gowns and quiet wisdom — who taught her to step outside her comfort zone. And when modelling unexpectedly entered her life, she did exactly what she had been taught: she dared.
What does a typical day look like for you — and how do you manage to balance it all?
I wake up at 6:30, get ready, have breakfast, and I am at school by 8:30. Classes end at 2:30, followed by volleyball practice. Then I head to work — coaching gymnastics at Gyros Gymnastics. After that — another volleyball practice. Home around 10:30, in bed by 10:50. Every single day.
What is one myth about modelling that you would love to debunk?
That models eat very little. At shoots, runway shows, and on set, the food is always plentiful — we have a choice of everything, and we eat to sustain ourselves through a long working day.
What is the best piece of advice you have received in your career so far?
“There is no place for an ego in anything you do.”
How would you describe your personal style off the runway and outside of shoots?
At school I wear a uniform, and otherwise I am in my volleyball attire. But when I meet up with friends, I love getting dressed depending on my mood, the weather, and the occasion. I can go from the trendiest outfit to something entirely classic.
How do you prepare physically and mentally for shoots or runway shows?
Physically: I make sure I get a good night’s rest, stay hydrated, and eat well. Mentally: I focus on presenting the designer’s clothing in the most fashionable and desirable way possible for the audience.

What keeps you motivated when the industry feels slow or challenging?
I fill that time with other things that matter to me — sport, family, studies, and friends. When your life is full outside of work, the slow periods simply do not get the chance to break you.
What does success mean to you personally?
Being the best version of myself, working towards what I love, being happy, making those I love happy, and being trustworthy and loyal. To me — that is success.
Who or what inspires you in fashion and in life?
My nonna and her wardrobe. She has the most beautiful vintage gowns and has been dressing me up my whole life. She has always given me fashion advice and taught me the most important lesson: quality over quantity, and always stay true to the classics.
Do you have any fashion rules you follow — or love to break?
I do not really believe fashion has rules. I honestly believe everything and anything goes — as long as you wear it well.
Do you have any dreams or ambitions beyond modelling?
My dream is to earn a university scholarship through volleyball, become a Division 1 athlete, and study psychology at the same time. I want to become a therapist for children.
What would you like to say to those who are just starting to dream about entering the fashion industry?
Stay centred, be friendly — and remember: your job is to show the designer’s work in the best possible light. You are not the centre of attention — the clothing is.

How do you usually spend your free time? School, rep volleyball, and coaching — there is barely any free time. But I cherish every minute of it.
What inspires you outside of work? Volleyball.

Favourite TV series: Mary Poppins and Grey’s Anatomy
Pre-shoot or pre-show rituals: The night before — a deep facial cleanse with a mask. I moisturise my body with cream or oil, make sure my nails are clean and done, wash and detangle my hair. And I always pack my bag with all my runway essentials in advance.
Favourite food: Anything my nonna makes.
